Rev 1:4 – What’s in a Name

Rev 1:4  John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;

The longest name in the Bible is found in Isa 8:1:  Mahershalalhashbaz.  This is nothing compared to the Name of God.  In Rev 1:4 God is described as the one which is, which was, and which is to come.  All of the names we have for God in the bible describe some amazing characteristic of Himself.  Rev 1:4 gives us a glimpse into how long God has lived and will live, forever.  Even from the very beginning, Gen 1:1, the Hebrew word for God is Elohim – The plural form of El, which means the Strong Ones.  Here are some more:

El Shaddai:“God Almighty.”

El Elyon: “The Most High God.”

El Olam: “The Everlasting God.”

Yahweh (YHWH): “To exist, be”

Yahweh Jireh (Yireh): “The Lord will provide.”  God provides for his people, most importantly salvation.

Yahweh Nissi: “The Lord is my Banner.”  God is our victory, he fights for His people.

Yahweh Shalom: “The Lord is Peace.”  God is our peace and rest, the work of salvation is complete.

Yahweh Sabbaoth:“The Lord of Hosts.”  God is the commander of the heavenly army.

Yahweh Maccaddeshcem: “The Lord your Sanctifier.”  God sets believers apart for his purposes.

Yahweh Ro’i: “The Lord my Shepherd.” God cares for the sheep of his own pasture.

Yahweh Tsidkenu: “The Lord our Righteousness.”  God is our righteousness.

Yahweh Shammah: “The Lord is there.”  God is personally present.

Yahweh Elohim Israel: “The Lord, the God of Israel.”  God in contrast to the false gods of the nations, is the God of his chosen people.

God does not limit himself to a single name; instead he uses all of his names to reveal Himself to his dear chosen people.
